The Custodial Services Department at Saint John's University (SJU) invites applications for a full-time, benefit-eligible position of Custodian. Standard schedule for this position is 6:00am – 2:30pm M-F, part-time schedules are also available.
This position is responsible for all aspects of cleanliness, refuse/recycling removal and sanitation of assigned areas; refinishing floors, carpet shampooing, cleaning of rest rooms, shower rooms, offices, corridors, stairways, etc. Also does minor repair, maintenance and operates custodial equipment used to complete duties. The position will be involved with weekend, summer and fill in cleaning in all areas of the campus as assigned.The incumbent in this position is required to follow the policies and procedures of Saint John’s University and those of the Custodial Department, as an individual, and be able to apply these policies and procedures to subordinate employees. Final interpretation of the policies and procedures is done by the department manager.Institutional Inclusion Visioning Statement

  • Responsible for upkeep and appearance of assigned areas.
  • Responsible for cleaning and sanitizing rest rooms and shower areas.
  • Responsible for sweeping, dust mopping, wet mopping, auto scrubbing, carpet cleaning and refinishing entries, corridors, classrooms, meeting rooms, offices, lounges, etc.
  • Responsible for cleaning of windows, window coverings, furnishings, fixtures, etc. within assigned areas.
  • Responsible for removal of refuse and recycling from the buildings to outside holding containers and pick up areas.
  • Responsible for removal of snow or any object that prevents entry into or exit from buildings.
  • Responsible for the security of storage areas and equipment used in performing duties.
  • Responsible for minor maintenance and repair of equipment used.
  • Provide assistance with inventory, storing furniture and room condition reports. 
  • Perform related duties as requested, follow product and equipment usage and safety practices as directed.
  • Under the direction of the area supervisor, may oversee other employees.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Professional Experience: Institutional housekeeping experience preferred; willingness to do on the job training. Able to read and comprehend written and verbal instruction.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, student and visitors; direct students and at times other employees.
  • Initiative, organization and planning skills required.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of a variety of specialized cleaning products and procedures. Must be able to work with strong cleaning products, fumes and/or cleaning aids.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for prolonged periods of time involving lifting, moving furniture, mopping, scrubbing and routine cleaning duties. Must be able to lift
    cleaning equipment, furniture and load/unload supplies in excess of 25 pounds.
  • Ability to use various cleaning equipment and ladders.
  • Ability to use computers for emails, work orders and staff communications.
